Metrology Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Metrology Engineer to lead inspection work and support our increase in work load.

Metrology Engineer

The Metrology Engineer is an experienced, technically capable member of the metrology team, responsible for planning, executing and analysing dimensional inspection and measurement work across a range of industries. This role sits between hands-on technical support and senior technical leadership, with growing autonomy, ownership of projects, and responsibility for delivering high-quality outputs to customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute dimensional inspection and measurement tasks using advanced 3D scanning and optical metrology systems, with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.
  • Operate and program metrology hardware and software, including system setup, calibration checks and data capture in workshop and on-site environments.
  • Perform CAD comparisons, GD&T evaluation and data analysis, producing clear technical reports that support engineering decisions.
  • Take ownership of routine projects end-to-end, and contribute technically on more complex assignments, escalating to senior engineers where appropriate.
  • Support customer engagements on-site (UK-wide and occasionally internationally), demonstrating professionalism and clear technical communication.
  • Utilize best practice methods to maintain measurement integrity, documentation and traceability across all deliverables.
  • Mentor and support junior colleagues (e.g. Metrology Technicians) through practical guidance, coaching and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities, including developing repeatable workflows, templates, and automation where beneficial.

What You’ll Need

  • Proven experience in dimensional metrology, inspection or precision measurement (or a relevant technical qualification with strong practical experience).
  • Hands-on experience with metrology systems and software (e.g. 3D scanning/optical measurement and inspection analysis tools).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and apply GD&T in inspection and reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality technical outputs.
  • Confidence working independently, with the judgement to seek support on unfamiliar or high-risk tasks.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK; additional security requirements may apply for certain customer environments.

Desirable

  • Experience with automated inspection setups and repeatable measurement cells (e.g. automated scanning workflows).
  • Exposure to scripting/automation or data processing to support efficient inspection delivery.
  • Background in aerospace, defence, automotive, or other regulated/high-precision manufacturing environments.
  • Clear career progression within a fast-growing engineering consultancy.
  • Exposure to a broad range of industries and advanced manufacturing environments.

What We Offer

  • A technically challenging role with opportunities to broaden capability and progress into senior engineering responsibilities.
  • Access to training and development aligned to the tools, methods and customer applications used day-to-day.
  • Varied project work across multiple industries, with a mix of site-based and workshop-based delivery.

Location

Basingstoke, Hampshire – with regular UK-wide travel and occasional international assignments.
