Modular optical strain and displacement measurement

ARAMIS Adjustable 12M

One modular optical setup for changing specimens, fixtures and measuring areas.

ARAMIS Adjustable 12M measures surface strain, displacement and deformation across materials and components. Configure the cameras, optics and lighting around your test, with 12-megapixel imaging for routine material characterisation and quasi-static structural work.

The visible surface, measured through the test

What does ARAMIS Adjustable 12M measure?

Record a prepared surface and follow its pattern through the test. A stereo arrangement measures three-dimensional displacement and surface strain; a suitable single-camera arrangement supports 2D DIC when the specimen remains in a controlled plane.

Use full-field colour maps to locate deformation, virtual extensometers to compare selected gauge lengths, and point tracking to follow movement. Adjustable 12M is a practical starting point when a laboratory needs flexible geometry and 25 fps at full resolution meets the test.

From setup to an engineering result

Four ways to get more from your test

Build the optical measurement around the quantity, location and stages that matter to the result.

01

Adapt the view to the specimen

Choose camera spacing, suitable lenses and working distance around the measuring area. The modular arrangement supports different specimen sizes and fixtures across a laboratory programme.

Plan a clear view of the complete movement from both cameras for stereo measurement.

02

Measure more than one gauge length

A full-field recording lets you compare strain and displacement at several locations after the test. Place virtual extensometers where they answer the question, rather than fixing the entire evaluation before loading.

Use consistent directions and averaging settings when comparing repeated specimens.

03

Bring loading into the evaluation

Acquire supported force or stroke signals alongside the images through the ARAMIS Controller. Relate a local strain concentration to the stage of loading at which it develops.

Force and specimen geometry are also needed when calculating stress or material parameters.

04

Reuse a proven analysis

Build a repeatable route from recorded stages to alignments, local results and reports. CORRELATE Pro templates help carry a consistent evaluation across a series of specimens.

Check pattern quality and the result on each specimen, even when the evaluation structure is reused.

Typical ARAMIS Adjustable 12M applications

Material specimens and changing component tests

Choose the view and evaluation around the part of the test that needs to be understood.

Tensile, compression and bending tests

Follow how strain develops across a material specimen during controlled loading. Investigate a necking region, notch or geometric transition and compare extension over different parts of the gauge section.

The same sensor concept can support shear and biaxial work with a suitable test arrangement. The visible surface, pattern and optical access determine the region that can be evaluated.

Components and structural loading

Measure displacement and deformation on brackets, joints, assemblies or structural parts. Adapt the measuring area as projects change, while keeping relevant supports and interfaces in view.

For simulation comparison, establish matching coordinates, loading and evaluation stages. Separate fixture movement from component response before interpreting the differences.

The sensor, optics and illumination work together

For stereo 3D work, two 12 MP cameras record the specimen from different viewpoints. Select camera spacing, metrology optics, stand-off distance and illumination to cover the required area while retaining enough pixels on the smallest feature of interest.

Standard measuring areas range from approximately 20 × 15 mm to 5000 × 4000 mm across different configurations. Changing the optical geometry or relevant lenses requires the appropriate calibration and verification procedure before measurement.

The quotation will define the software licence, calibration equipment, workstation requirements and any optional accessories for your application.

ARAMIS Controller for synchronising optical camera acquisition with external test signals

Synchronised force and image acquisition

Put loading and deformation on the same timeline

The ARAMIS Controller links the sensor, measurement software and test machine. It coordinates camera triggering, supplies the cameras and records supported external signals, so optical results can be evaluated alongside the conditions applied during the test.

For a tensile test, that may mean relating force to virtual extension or local surface strain. For a component test, it may mean comparing the optical displacement with machine stroke or another transducer.

Specify the signal range, electrical interface and timing requirement alongside the acquisition mode. A load cell, test machine or external instrument supplies the signal; the Controller acquires the supported input.

ARAMIS Adjustable 12M questions, answered

Plan the measurement before the test

What is Adjustable 12M used for?

It measures surface displacement and strain in materials and components. The modular concept suits teams adapting the optical geometry to different measuring areas, specimen sizes and laboratory arrangements.

Can it be used for both 2D and 3D DIC?

Yes, with the appropriate configuration. One camera provides in-plane 2D DIC; calibrated stereo cameras provide 3D coordinates and deformation. Moving to 3D requires the complete compatible hardware and software arrangement.

What is the full-resolution frame rate?

The 4096 x 3000 pixel image records up to 25 fps. Higher-rate modes use reduced image areas or binning. The maximum listed 150 fps mode uses 4096 x 500 pixels, retaining less image height.

What measuring area is available?

The standard range is 20 x 15 to 5000 x 4000 mm in field-of-view length and width, depending on setup. Lens, geometry and working distance define the usable area. Discuss other requirements as a specific configuration.

How does it differ from the 3D Camera 12M?

Adjustable 12M uses a modular concept with flexible camera and lens arrangements. The 3D Camera 12M uses an industrial housing and preset lens concept. Their setup and measuring-area ranges are not identical.

When should I choose 24M instead?

Consider ARAMIS Adjustable 24M when more spatial detail is needed, such as a fine strain gradient or small electronic feature. Confirm that the pattern and evaluation can use the detail. Pixel count alone does not define measurement uncertainty.

Can I change the measuring area between tests?

Yes. The modular concept supports different measuring areas using suitable optics and sensor arrangements. A change may require a different lens and calibration or verification before measurement. Include lens changes and those procedures when comparing setup time between projects.

What should I include in an enquiry?

Provide specimen dimensions, field of view, working distance, expected strain and displacement, recording rate and duration. Include external signals, software outputs and any future stereo or multi-sensor requirement.

How much does ARAMIS Adjustable 12M cost?

The system starts from £49,545*, including the full system, tripod, one lens, one calibration object, ARAMIS Controller, laptop, CORRELATE Essential Line software and delivery within the UK. Training, installation and setup are excluded. The quotation confirms the measuring area and final configuration.
