How Delta XD is transforming train upgrades with digital twins and reverse engineering
Modernising passenger rolling stock is one of rail’s biggest engineering challenges. With fleets that are decades old, engineers often face a lack of accurate CAD models and drawings. That’s where 3D scanning comes in.
Delta XD, specialists in 3D scanning and metrology, were tasked with capturing the full as-built condition of multiple train types to support upgrades including new braking systems, refreshed interiors and, critically, the rollout of the European Train Control System (ETCS).

The Digital Twin Advantage
Using a hybrid scanning approach, Delta XD combined:
-
Full-colour photogrammetry for large-scale context of train exteriors and interiors.
-
ZEISS T-SCAN Hawk 2 structured light scanning for sub-millimetre detail on driver’s cabs, braking systems and ETCS mounting points.
-
Layered digital twin techniques to document both assembled and stripped-down components.
The result? Highly accurate, fully navigable digital twins that gave engineers the confidence to design upgrades right-first-time.
Overcoming the Challenges
Working in live depots with limited access and tight schedules, Delta XD delivered under tough conditions—capturing everything from HVAC systems to undercarriages in just a week per train. Their workflow ensured speed, safety, and accuracy even in environments ranging from -5°C to +30°C.
Engineering Value Delivered
-
Time & cost savings by scanning 20 different train types faster than traditional measurement.
-
Reduced errors & rework through precision CAD models and digital verification.
-
Better stakeholder engagement with intuitive colour models for non-technical teams.
-
Future-ready workflows that enable advanced simulations such as RF interference checks for ETCS antenna placement.
The Bigger Picture
This project sets a new benchmark for digital transformation in rail. By proving that the cost of scanning is far outweighed by efficiency and risk reduction, Delta XD shows why 3D scanning should become standard practice for modernisation and asset management. Read more in our case study.
